Jón Steinsson

Jón Steinsson is Chancellor’s Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, having joined the department in 2018. Before Berkeley, Jón taught at Columbia University from 2008 to 2018. He is co-director of the Monetary Economics program of the National Bureau of Economic Research. His main area of research is empirical macroeconomics, focusing on characterizing price rigidity and its macroeconomic consequences, identifying the effects of monetary and fiscal policies, and understanding the effects of forward guidance on the economy. He grew up in Iceland and participates actively in the political and economic discourse in that country. Jón received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University in 2000 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2007.
